Sierksma is receiving the NWO grant for his study ‘TRAPed in silence – neural
sensitivity to silence’.
Tinnitus
He explained to NWO: ‘What do you hear when your surroundings are quiet? One in seven people hears a ringing or hissing sound. They have tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. It is not known why some people experience silence while others experience tinnitus. In this project, I will study brain cells in mice that become active only when there is no sound. How does their activity influence the activity of other neurons and the perception of silence? I will also investigate whether the activity of these brain cells changes following the induction of tinnitus.’
