Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss how midbrain circuits centered on the superior colliculus transform visual input into defensive and investigatory actions. I will highlight how collicular representations, interactions with zona incerta and periaqueductal gray, and cortical modulation together shape behavioral state. Combining behavioral analysis, electrophysiology and circuit manipulation reveals how vision is flexibly converted into action without fixed perceptual templates.
