The cerebellar and cerebral cortices have vastly different network architectures and neuronal activity patterns but the two structures are heavily interconnected via extensive cerebello-thalamo-cortical-pontine reciprocal projections. Both cortices are jointly involved in motor, cognitive and affective functions suggesting that a more complete understanding of the neuronal processes controlling these functions can be gained from simultaneous observations of neuronal activities in both structures during behavior. Recent findings from our lab and others suggest that the cerebellum may play a key role in coordinating task-related neuronal communication between forebrain structures. This presentation will discuss relevant findings and their implications.
